AI Must Go Hand-in-Hand with Worker Protection, NSITF Tells African Businesses

"AI is redefining workplaces and business operations at an unprecedented pace, making it imperative for institutions to protect workers while embracing innovation." Faleye

The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has urged governments, businesses and technology stakeholders across Africa to ensure that the rapid adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is matched with stronger social protection measures for workers.

Managing Director and Chief Executive of the NSITF, Mr. Oluwaseun Faleye, made the call on Monday at the launch of the ESBC–InnoPower LLC (USA) Free MSMEs AI Master Training Programme held at the UN House in Abuja.

Faleye, represented by the Executive Director of Operations, Mrs. Mojisola Ali-Macaulay, said AI is redefining workplaces and business operations at an unprecedented pace, making it imperative for institutions to protect workers while embracing innovation.

He noted that while AI presents enormous opportunities for increased productivity, innovation and economic growth, it also poses significant challenges, including job displacement, changing skill requirements and emerging workplace risks.

According to him, Africa's digital transformation must not leave workers vulnerable but should instead be anchored on policies that guarantee decent work, continuous skills development and comprehensive social protection.

"The future of work must be both innovative and inclusive. As businesses embrace AI, protecting workers through effective social security systems should remain a priority," he said.

Faleye stressed that the NSITF, through the Employees' Compensation Scheme, remains committed to safeguarding Nigerian workers against occupational hazards and evolving workplace risks, regardless of technological changes.

He commended the organisers of the AI Master Training Programme for equipping Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) with practical AI knowledge, describing the initiative as timely in strengthening the competitiveness of African businesses in the digital economy.

The NSITF boss further urged participants to leverage the training to improve productivity while ensuring that technological advancement translates into safer workplaces, better jobs and inclusive economic growth.

The ESBC–InnoPower LLC programme is designed to expose MSMEs to AI tools and digital solutions that can enhance business efficiency, innovation and global competitiveness. It also seeks to build the capacity of entrepreneurs to harness emerging technologies for sustainable enterprise development.
