The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has intensified its nationwide drive to improve workplace safety, as its Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) campaign moves to Bauchi, Jos and Kaduna.

The three-day stakeholder engagement, which began on Tuesday and ends Thursday, is being organised by the Fund’s Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Department under its “Programme on Safety Regulations, Policies and Standards.”

The initiative is aimed at equipping employers with the knowledge and practical skills needed to prevent workplace accidents, manage risks and build stronger safety cultures in their organisations.

In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Alexandra Mede, NSITF said the programme would deepen stakeholders’ understanding of OSH frameworks, challenges and opportunities while encouraging employers to integrate workplace safety into their organisational and business strategies.

The Fund said the engagement would also strengthen participants’ capacity to develop and implement effective safety policies, improve incident investigation, promote safety leadership and expose employers to emerging technologies and innovations in workplace safety.

The turnout has exceeded expectations, according to NSITF. While 85 employers were invited to each of the three ongoing sessions in Bauchi, Jos and Kaduna, the Fund said participation had been significantly higher.

The development followed strong attendance during the first phase of the campaign held in Owerri, Port Harcourt and Lagos between August 11 and 14, where more than 100 employers participated in each location.

NSITF said the campaign was designed to move occupational safety and health beyond a mere regulatory compliance obligation and establish it as a critical component of business strategy and national development.

The Fund noted that increasing workplace incidents and compensation claims in some sectors had further underscored the need for employers to strengthen safety leadership, risk management and incident investigation mechanisms.

The Bauchi, Jos and Kaduna engagements are expected to conclude on Thursday, with the NSITF indicating that the stakeholder outreach will be extended to other parts of the country.

The broader campaign, the Fund said, is intended to promote wider adoption of occupational safety standards and foster safer and more productive workplaces nationwide.
